The CSO has released the first set of data from the long-awaited 1926 census, shedding light on the working lives of men and women in the early years of the Irish Free State.
As part of its Historical Statistics Recovery initiative, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has published a table showing the types of occupations recorded in the 1926 census. This marks the first release of data from that census by the CSO. The 1926 census is scheduled for public release online on 18 April 2026 under the 100-year rule.

The new table provides information on occupations by sex and allows users to select a location or job type to generate tailored results. This makes it possible to explore how work varied across Ireland nearly a century ago. You can explore the table here.
