Dublin City Libraries and Dublin City Council Culture Company are seeking up to five historians for the Dublin City Historians in Residence programme. Applications close on 6 October 2023.
In a bid to foster a deeper connection between the citizens of Dublin and their rich heritage, an open call has been issued for up to five historians to participate in the Dublin City Historians in Residence programme.

This initiative is jointly undertaken by Dublin City Libraries and Dublin City Council Culture Company. The selected historians will play an important role in engaging with local communities, conducting historical research and promoting access to historical collections.
Each selected historian will be assigned to a specific area within Dublin City Council, where they will collaborate closely with local libraries, community groups, schools and the general public. Successful applicants will be responsible for delivering a programme of regular public talks, workshops and events. The historians will also contribute to the writing and editing of the History on Your Doorstep publication series and collaborate with the Dublin Festival of History team to create the festival programme.

Interested individuals should have a deep knowledge of Irish and local history, along with a proven track record in historical research, either through education or professional experience.
The Dublin City Historians in Residence initiative was first introduced in 2017. Over the years, the Historians in Residence have diligently worked within various neighbourhoods across Dublin city, actively encouraging local residents to explore the past. The aim is to make history and historical sources accessible and enjoyable for all, with a particular focus on the collections held at Dublin City Library and Archive.

Each historian selected for this unique opportunity will be offered a service contract for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for an additional 12 to 24 months, contingent upon continued funding support.
To be eligible, applicants must commit to being physically present in Dublin for approximately three days per week, spanning 48 weeks from January to December 2024. The working pattern and programme of work will be agreed upon with the successful candidates, who will receive a maximum fee of €28,500 (ex. VAT) for their services in 2024.
