Investigating the legacy of the landed aristocracy through the stories of their descendants, the highly anticipated “Landed Gentry in Ireland” oral history collection is now on sale!
Irish Life and Lore, based in Tralee, Co. Kerry, has released a new oral history collection: “The Landed Gentry in Ireland”. It is a collection of audio recordings of 26 descendants of the Irish landed gentry, recorded between 2019 and 2023. They tell the stories of their ancestors and discuss their legacy.

The project was instigated and funded by Sir Robert and Lady Sheelagh Goff, and this new collection will be officially launched at Enniscoe House, Co. Mayo, in late June.

The entire collection is on sale for €190 directly from the Irish Life and Lore website, but individual recordings can also be purchased at €7 each. The full collection will be deposited in public and college libraries throughout Ireland, where it will be freely accessible to all.

In other news from this popular oral history organization, Irish Life and Lore is currently printing 250 limited-edition copies of The Big House in Kerry: a social history in hardcover with dust jackets.
This lavishly illustrated publication was initially released in softbound in November 2022 and tells the stories of 20 of Kerry’s historic estate houses and their occupants. It offers the first detailed examination of the influence of the landed gentry on the county’s social, political and physical landscape. Many of the names of the families discussed will be familiar to our readers as influential players in shaping the story of post-medieval and early modern Kerry.

Each limited-edition hardcover copy will be individually numbered and signed by the editor, Jane O’Hea O’Keeffe, and will surely become a collector’s item in the future.
