Each week, PICS FROM THE PAST features a different old photograph, postcard, print or piece of memorabilia that captures the people, places and memories of long ago, offering a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s past.
This week’s pic from the past shows a group in Ballinadee, Co. Cork. The old, damaged photo was kindly shared with us by one of our regular contributors, Dr Paul O’Brien, originally from Cork but living in Canada. It comes from the collection of his late mother, Ellen O’Brien (née Crowley) of Ballinadee. Paul made an effort to restore the image, but some of the original damage remains, and this copy is quite pixelated.
Even so, Paul recognized the postman in the photo as someone he had met in Ballinadee in the 1940s, remembering his surname as Kelly. Thanks to the Ballinadee Facebook group, he has now been identified by his grandchildren as John Kelly of Kilgobbin, Ballinadee and the man on the left with the beard has been identified as Patrick Corcoran (from Corcoran’s pub in Ballinadee). The couple on the cart might be Paul’s grandparents, Tim and Margaret Crowley, but this has not been confirmed. Can anyone help to identify the others? Please comment below.
