Recent events gearing up for Michael Collins’ 100th anniversary
Some commemorative events have already taken place including the re-enactment of Michael Collins’ famous pre-election speech, which he gave outside O’Donovan’s Hotel in Clonakilty on 15 June 1922. Local talent John O’Leary, standing in the back of a Ford Model T in front of the hotel, delivered the speech 100 years later to the day. Surrounded by a large crowd, many in period costume, John superbly delivered the speech while mimicking Collins’ gestures, as the original footage of the election rally played on a screen nearby. If you missed it, watch below!
A new Civil War mural by Cork artist Garreth Joyce was also unveiled in Croppy Park in Clonakilty in early July to commemorate the beginning of the Irish Civil War.
